I loathe the words Christian and Christianity. They have been overused by con artists and money hungry bible thumpers who rule their flock by fear and the multitude of punishments they can inflict upon those who do not conform.
I have a value system that I have adopted over the years that allow me to value myself and all other people. Some I learned from adults in my early years who were tolerated and loving to a rather head strong child. Their patience and steady teaching built a foundation of love, empathy and forgiveness that guided me through rough teenage rebellions and poor decisions into a life where I managed to have a successful career and life that I am proud of.
I do not want to be labeled a Christian. I follow my values not from fear but the knowledge that I want to be as Mr Rogers said “a helper”.
People can follow those positive values without being told to do so because it will please some deity. In fact, they can follow them in spite of their religion, if there's a conflict. Just being a good human.
Humanist can cover it, I think. I did a Google, and the key principles of humanism are: reason and science; ethics and morality; human dignity and autonomy; responsibility; a non-theistic worldview.
