Yes. Many countries in the last 70 years severed their relations with the British Monarchy. Some stayed in the Commonwealth and some have not. South Africa was sanctioned from the Commonwealth because of their apartheid laws from 1961 to 1994. That sanction, boycotts and publicity helped to eliminate the official apartheid system. So belonging to the Commonwealth has some value.

I tend to think that if something isn't broken, don't try to fix it. We don't yet know what kind of King Charles will be, although he indicated that he will follow his mother's example of service. It is really more a question for Britain, as we wouldn't have a King if they did not.

Coincidence, or not? Many of the European countries with high living standards and stable post WW2 governments are constitutional monarchies. I certainly would not be happy to see Canada adopt a political system looking like the US model. I think that our huggly-buggly system is more elastic and less reactionary.
