CNN's fact checker, Daniel Dale, checked Biden's news conference from July 11th. It did not do well.
I assume that any news conference that Trump does will be full of false and misleading claims, most done deliberately, but a few because he just can't be bothered. I also assumed, up to now, that a Biden press conference would be with mostly true and relevant facts, carefully presented. Maybe the occasional tweak for effect, but not very often. I trusted that was what I was listening to.
However, this CNN fact check found a number of points where he seemed to just remember something wrong, or swap numbers around, or get confused. Not really deliberately, to mislead us, it's just what he seems to do now, more and more. And unfortunately, every time Biden speaks from now on, there will be detailed media scrutiny, as opposed to assessing the big issues. Granted, he also did show a good grasp of facts at times and presented them well, but there were those slips. Too many?
Last February everything was supposedly fine with Biden’s health, cognitive included. I would like to see Daniel Dale apply the same process to an earlier Biden press conference, so that we can compare. Unfortunately that might have been last year, as there aren't a lot to choose from. Is this a slide in his abilities since February? We all age, and will likely eventually show a similar decline in our abilities, but Biden seems to be declining too fast to be the best candidate against Trump. Kamala Harris is younger and shows none of Biden’s cognitive decline. Would she be a better candidate? She is Black and more importantly, is a woman - sexism is still alive and well in the voting public. However, there is talk Trump should have bounced higher after The Debate, that maybe he's reached his ceiling of support, so the fight might be a little easier.
Trump is a crook and a creep, and will continue to be that - if not worse. Biden has been a good President, but it’s not all about the past. After he wins, Biden still needs to be an effective President for four more years.
If worse comes to worst and Trump stumbles into office, I don't believe he will kill democracy in one more term. He will be more efficient at it than last time, as he's already stacked the Supreme Court, carries a Get Out of Jail Free card, and can consult with that Project 2025 he knows nothing about. He will certainly cripple and further divide the country. America will recover, but such a cost, such a waste.
